Dr Alfred Thutloa is a marketing and communications practitioner with an interest in postmodern and commercial packages of health. He investigated how new health subjects are constructed and how through information, health management companies craft their readership. Ultimately, the aim of his research is to use these findings to contribute to a more democratic health delivery. He heads the corporate & marketing communications division at the South African Medical Research Council, he was head of marketing and communications for a pan-African research and advocacy organisation.
He led the marketing and strategic partnerships portfolio for a corporate and leisure brand operating in Cape Town and Mauritius. He was a communications specialist at Momentum Metropolitan focusing on health communications. He coordinated communications for mothers2mothers, a non-profit that employs, trains and empowers HIV-positive women as community health workers across Africa. His experience in the magazine industry includes titles such as Men’s Health (Best Life) and Top Billing.
He holds a PhD in Linguistics (specializing in health communications) from the University of the Western Cape, a Masters degree in Intercultural Communication, a postgraduate degree in Cultures and Heritage Studies and a Bachelors in International Studies from Stellenbosch University.
His vision for PHASA is to enhance its brand, grow its membership base and audiences through an integrated marketing and communications strategy.
