Reducing Maternal Mortality with MDSR

In a recently published abstract, Heather Scott and Akinyele Dairo discuss the use of maternal death surveillance and response (MDSR), as “one of several low cost, high impact strategies to reduce maternal mortality.” South African MDSR data were evaluated, and revealed that the use of MDSR is not adequate in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

For further reading, see the January 2015 USAID Strategy for Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality. Primary causes of maternal mortality in South Africa are found on p. 27, with non-pregnancy related infection being the primary cause of maternal death in 46% of cases (data from 2005-2007).
