Poverty and Disability in South Africa

“Disability is both a cause and consequence of poverty.” – Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini.

In a statement released on 22 November 2015, Bathabile Dlamini, Minister of Social Development, discussed the dramatic burden of disability and poverty on South Africa, and the inextricable link between the two conditions.

In order to draw people out of this cycle of poverty and disability, the National Development Plan aims to incorporate considerations for disability into all aspects of planning.
