Research Manager (two positions at Senior Scientist/Specialist Scientist levels), with expertise in Biostatistics/Statistics.

The MRC Environment & Health Research Unit (E&HRU) conducts research on a range of environmental factors affecting the health of the South African population. Studies related to concerns such as lead poisoning and exposure to other toxic substances, the health of mining communities, urban poverty and climate change, are conducted across the country, in both urban and rural settings.
An exciting and challenging new position has been created for a Research Manager (up to two positions available) to oversee the conduct and ensure research integrity of key E&HRU research projects. Applicants should have a keen interest in, and suitable qualifications and research experience related to, environmental health. The successful candidate/s will be required to participate in (i) grant/proposal writing and/income generation, (ii) research management/coordination, including report writing and overseeing ethical requirements, (iii) conducting statistical analyses and providing statistical support to all in the E&HRU, (iv) overseeing data management in the E&HRU, (v) stakeholder management, including progress reports, (vi) overseeing research site management and (vii) publishing in peer reviewed journals.
- Masters degree in Statistics/Biostatistics, Environmental Epidemiology, Public Health or other related field;
- At least three years’ experience coordinating research projects relating to environmental or public health;
- Project management experience, including budgeting, staff management and liaison with finance and other operational departments;
- At least one first author and one co-authored publication in a peer reviewed journal;
- Previous training in research integrity, for example, good clinical practice and/or human subjects protection;
- Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite and a statistical package.
A PhD, or commencement of a PhD, would be advantageous.
This position is associated with a 3-year contract, which may be renewed dependent on outputs.
Applicants should be highly organized and meticulous, be able and willing to travel to study sites whenever needed, and have good verbal and written communication skills.
A cost-to-company remuneration package of R597 000 per annum or R684 000 per annum will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.
