Online MPH features interdisciplinary approach to solving contemporary PH challenges

The outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa in 2014 reminds us of the critical need for public health officials in our communities. This crisis brings home the reality of the shortage of skilled and knowledgeable public health officials and leaders needed to devise strategies to prevent the spread of diseases and promote public health around the globe.

Lack of awareness contributes to the challenges facing health services in Sub-Saharan Africa. People do not know enough about common public health issues nor what kind of support and care is available locally. In order to address the overwhelming challenges, public health professionals who are strong, passionate, dedicated and willing to collaborate are needed. The more public health professionals in South Africa, the greater the opportunity the country has to evaluate current public health issues and tackle new challenges with timely and appropriate solutions.

No longer staffed solely by medical specialists, the public health field now includes professionals from other sectors (including education and business) who recognise that public health is a multidisciplinary field. To help address the growing need of public health professionals, the University of Roehampton, London Online launched a fully online Master of Public Health (MPH) programme for those who wish to begin a career in public health, or for other professionals interested in a growing and important field with great impact on the region.

Roehampton Online is committed to creating public health leaders capable of changing their community and the world around them through the prevention of disease and the promotion of health. The University’s online MPH is specifically designed for professionals working in healthcare and other sectors who share an interest in promoting health, preventing disease and improving the quality of life in local communities.

Students can gain knowledge and skills that will help them plan and implement innovative, effective public health interventions that reflect an understanding of complex and dynamic public health issues. The programme, which employs an interdisciplinary approach, offers online collaboration with a diverse, global student population and expert faculty. Students have the opportunity to combine their professional experience with the public health knowledge gained in the programme to prepare them for imminent changes in the industry.

Based in the UK, the University of Roehampton has a long tradition of postgraduate education in life sciences, with particular strengths in ageing, chronic diseases and nutrition, all of which are global public health issues. Additionally, the University is well regarded in healthcare policy and promotion.

Roehampton Online, in partnership with Laureate Online Education, offers the opportunity for all members of the Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA) to earn a UK MPH degree from anywhere in the world through its interactive approach to learning online. Additionally, PHASA members can benefit from a special offer, saving US $500 (approximately ZAR 5,000) on their first module by enquiring online or by contacting the local representative for the University of Roehampton Online in South Africa, Daudi Ngona ( /+27 (0) 82 477 8231). Candidates must successfully enrol to begin their programme (January 29th and March 12th 2015) to take advantage of this special offer.
