Lecturer – Occupational Hygiene (Five Year Contract)

The Wits School of Public Health (WSPH) is one of the largest schools of public health in South Africa with an international reputation for its teaching programmes, conducting high quality and relevant research, community outreach and policy engagement activities.

The WSPH seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Occupational Hygiene with skills and experience in occupational hygiene and occupational health to co-ordinate and teach on occupational health related courses and supervise postgraduate students. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Anglo-American endowed chair in occupational hygiene and participate in a research programme to strengthen the discipline of occupational hygiene in South Africa and in the Africa region. The candidate will also be encouraged and supported to pursue doctoral studies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Master’s in occupational hygiene, industrial physiology or related sciences
  • Evidence of teaching, tutoring and/or post-graduate supervision experience
  • Evidence of research ability
  • At least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or book
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team
  • Professional experience in occupational health endeavours

Registration with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) at the level of an Occupational Hygienist will be an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Teach occupational hygiene/health specific courses primarily to postgraduate students and occasionally to undergraduate medical students
  • Coordinate the Diploma in Occupational Health and various MPH-occupational hygiene modules in the WSPH
  • Supervise postgraduate students in occupational hygiene/health and public health research
  • Contribute to successful grant raising; and
  • Contribute to expanding the research portfolio in occupational health and hygiene in the WSPH.

Remuneration

The remuneration package offered will depend on qualifications and experience and is subject to the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg regulations.
