Senior Lecturer – Paediatrics and Child health

The Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative is starting a professional Masters programme in Child Nursing with the Division of Nursing and Midwifery. This is the first Clinical Masters in Child and Critical Care Nursing in South Africa, and has been designed to prepare clinician nurses to participate in shifting child health outcomes and the care of complex and chronically ill children within Specialist District Health Teams and the broader health system. This academic programme is being nationally accredited and the first intake of students will be in 2015. This position offers the unique opportunity to be involved in this ground-breaking programme’s academic and clinical design and implementation from its inception.

The successful candidate will have achieved significantly in this field, be a passionate learner and teacher, and have extensive experience in curriculum design and development. As part of a team of nurse educators and practitioners who are working towards achieving the best possible health outcomes for children, the successful candidate will also be required to act as the research programme lead in various clinical practice sites working with small groups of participants in practice related research.


  • Registered or registerable with the South African Nursing Council
  • Masters in Child Nursing
  • Postgraduate qualification in paediatrics or paediatric critical care nursing
  • Experience in tertiary education of clinical nursing
  • Verifiable skills in adult education and programme design
  • A publication record


  • PhD
  • Experience in innovative education methods
  • Experience in teaching on a clinical masters programme
  • Experience in educational programme evaluation
  • Advanced PowerPoint, word and excel


  • Academic lead in the new Clinical Masters in Child Nursing Programme
  • Work closely with Initiative lead in programme design and development of the curriculum
  • Teaching and coordination of teaching and clinical learning of clinical masters student group
  • Design and implementation of educational programme evaluation
  • Mentor and co-supervise clinical masters research related to the Initiative research programme
  • Actively participate and develop a leadership role in initiative and departmental activities
  • Actively develop a research interest that is aligned with the Initiative goal of leading practice change in child nursing

The annual remuneration package is between R413 365 – 595 903.
