Senior Lecturer (Academic Acceleration Programme) (2 permanent posts) UKZN

Applications are invited from PhD-qualified South African African Female or Male academics for the Academic Acceleration Programme to promote transformation of Academic staffing within the College of Health Sciences. The Academic Acceleration Programme aims to accelerate promotion to the Professoriate for South African African staff, by providing candidates, with demonstrated potential, the support they need to succeed, including freeing up their time to focus on key deliverables for research excellence, and by providing the necessary resource support. Successful applicants will be expected to engage with research by conducting self-initiated research projects, supervising postgraduate students, writing for publication, sourcing research funds from national and international agencies, and achieving NRF rating.

Seed funding will be made available to launch research projects and to support Postgraduate student and Postdoctoral Fellow recruitment.

Incumbents will be appointed at Senior Lecturer level and earn competitive salaries. For a period of three years, successful applicants will undertake minimal undergraduate teaching as their teaching duties will be covered by their Postgraduate student supervision. Following this three-year period, successful candidates will be expected to take on a normal Undergraduate teaching load within the relevant Discipline.

Successful candidates will be expected to generate and meet a Personal Development Plan to ensure capacity development towards success, and will be enrolled on a leadership development programme.

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in a relevant Discipline;
  • Registration with the relevant health professions council as appropriate to the Discipline and if applicable AND
  • Strong research trajectory demonstrating potential to succeed within the Professoriate, as evidenced by recent publications, and a strong portfolio of evidence against the UKZN promotion criteria for research excellence available at
