3 Posts Wits Department of Family Medicine

The Wits Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, invites suitably qualified health professionals interested in being part of a dynamic growing academic department, to apply for the following posts:

Post 1 Lecturer – part-time (up to 50%) contract

The successful applicant will assist with coordinating undergraduate teaching in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) degree as well as provide support to research activities within the Department of Family Medicine.

Requirements:

  • Registration as a health professional with the Health Professions Council of SA
  • A Masters degree or equivalent qualification in a health science field or relevant applied social science discipline
  • At least 2 years experience in an appropriate health care setting

Recommendations:

  • Primary health care experience
  • Teaching experience
  • Research experience

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Assist with co-ordinating the Fundamentals of Health and Disease programme for final year BHSc students
  • Assist with GEMP 1 and 2 teaching, lecturing and possibly site development
  • Assist with other undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment responsibilities as required
  • Support the development of a research programme within the Department of Family Medicine and conduct appropriate research

Post 2 Lecturer/Senior Lecturer – part-time (up to 50%) contract

The successful applicant will coordinate the department’s undergraduate teaching role for fifth year medical students as well as support research activities within the Department of Family Medicine.

Requirements:

  • MBBCh or equivalent medical degree
  • Registration with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner
  • At least five years clinical experience in primary care/family medicine

Recommendations:

  • A postgraduate qualification relevant to primary care/family medicine
  • Teaching experience
  • Research experience

The incumbent will be required to

  • Assist with co-ordinating the rotating two-week GEMP 3 Family Medicine programme, including lecturing and assessment
  • Liaise with community-based GP preceptors to develop stronger ties between them and the department and facilitate provide educational workshops for them
  • Assist with GEMP 1 and 2 Patient-Doctor theme development and lecturing
  • Assist with other undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment responsibilities as required
  • Support the development of a research programme within the Department of Family Medicine and conduct appropriate research

Level:  CL08 – Lecturer

Post 3 Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Adjunct Professor – full-time permanent

The successful applicant will serve as the clinical coordinator of postgraduate (registrar) training in family medicine. Responsibilities are focused on the MMed degree, through which registrars are trained as family medicine specialists in seven districts across Gauteng and North West provinces. The incumbent will work closely with members of the post-graduate training team, particularly the behavioural scientist and district site educational coordinators to enhance the training programme and to ensure that high quality Masters level education is matched with appropriate clinical support across the training platform. The role also includes: holistically developing registrars to meet the national family medicine outcomes and academic mentoring of district based educators. The candidate must possess a strong commitment to post-graduate education in general and to improving the experience for individual registrars and joint staff in particular.  

Requirements:

  • Masters degree or equivalent in family medicine
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of SA as a specialist family physician
  • At least 2 years’ experience in higher education
  • Must be qualified to hold a Wits Faculty appointment at one of the level(s) above

Recommendations:

  • Knowledge of South African health services
  • Understanding of and commitment to primary health care
  • Programme coordination and research experience
  • Advanced qualification in education, e.g. PG diploma

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Take a lead in overall coordination of the MMed degree programme, including administrative responsibilities, together with the behavioural scientist
  • Provide educational support to family medicine registrars
  • Provide faculty development in education and training for district based family physician supervisors
  • Assist with organising the face-to-face contact weeks with the registrars in each year of training, including content and supporting materials
  • Support the teaching of clinical and generic skills to meet the national family medicine outcomes
  • Deliver practical teaching to registrars and other students in the department in appropriate fields, including participating in clinical patient consultation-based learning sessions at all training sites
  • Support the MMed candidates throughout the research process culminating in the final research reports
  • Work with colleagues to develop and implement a core curriculum, research programme and other departmental priorities
  • Liaise with learning sites in Gauteng and North West province to ensure support for the training platform, including assisting with recruitment and retention of both registrars and staff
  • Facilitate assessment of registrars
  • Design and monitor remediation programmes for registrars in difficulty
  • Facilitate the use of EBM in clinical settings and the use of information technology in teaching
  • Work with family medicine academic leadership to expand the reach and impact of family medicine
  • Assist with undergraduate teaching and assessment as required
  • Support the development of a research programme within the Department of Family Medicine and conduct appropriate research

Level:  CL08 – Lecturer, CL07 – Senior lecturer or CL06 – Adjunct Professor (depending on qualifications)
