The South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI), located within the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM), UCT, performs clinical trials of new TB vaccines.  We are seeking to appoint a medical doctor as Clinical Research Officer and invite applications from suitably qualified candidates for appointment to this three-year contract post. The post, based at the SATVI research site in Worcester, does not include routine after-hours duties.

The main purpose of this position is to provide medical oversight of research participants in vaccine trials and other TB studies, working in an established research team of doctors, nurses, and field staff. The Clinical Research Officer will be responsible for study-related medical assessment and management; including participant safety assessment and reporting; and adherence to protocol, regulatory, and ethical research standards.

The Clinical Research Officer will be given the opportunity to analyse and present study data, write manuscripts and other academic reports, and develop self-initiated grant proposals.

Requirements include:

  • Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent)
  • Registration with HPCSA as a medical practitioner
  • Additional postgraduate qualification(s) in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
    • Medicine, Paediatrics, or Public Health
    • Infectious Disease
    • Epidemiology and / or Biostatistics
    • Project Management


  • At least one year post-internship working experience in the health sector
  • Although previous research experience is not required, the following would be advantageous:
    • Experience in research and particularly infectious disease and TB research.
    • Experience and working knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and Protection of Human Participants in Research
    • Experience in Project Management

This is a 3 year contract position.  

The annual cost of employment is between R 610,000 – R654,000 (Full-time).

An additional allowance of 18% will apply.

A part-time or flexi-time appointment would be considered.
