SHORT COURSE 2014: Clinical Guidelines

Overall aim and objectives:

To train participants to understand the development, adaptation and implementation of evidence based guidelines.

Outcome/s:  

  • Describe the principles of development of evidence based guidelines
  • Outline the steps of guideline development
  • Describe the rationale for guideline adaptation
  • Outline the steps of guideline adaptation using the ADAPTE tool
  • Critically appraise guidelines using the AGREE II tool
  • Grade quality of evidence and formulate recommendations using GRADE methodology
  • Describe the barriers and enablers of implementation strategies
  • Select appropriate strategies for an implementation plan
  • Select measures to use as audit tools to demonstrate practice change
  • Start developing a plan for implementation of a guideline

Methods of assessment:

Participants will be required to write 2 assignments during the semester and one examination at the end of the course.

Teaching methods to be used for activity: 

A combination of contact sessions and Moodle (e-learning) will be used. There will be two contact sessions of two days each which will include formal lectures, individual and groupwork activities.

Details of face to face sessions at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University:

  • Block 1 – 11-12 August
  • Block 2 – 8-9 September

Cost:

  • R 2750 – Staff and students at Stellenbosch University
  • R 3300 – Students registered at other universities
  • R 4400 – Other

Closing date of applications:  13 June 2014

The course is accredited for 30 CPD points in level 1
