Two year part-time contract position Senior Scientist at the Cochrane Centre

An appropriately qualified and experienced senior qualitative researcher is required to join our team on a part-time (8 hours per week), two year contract basis, with the objective of playing a leading role in the South African Guideline Excellence Project (SAGE), an MRC Flagship funded grant of the South African Cochrane Centre.

The candidate should have a background in qualitative research with a strong foundation and experience in project implementation, data collection (including interviews, focus groups and other) and data analysis. They will be required to contribute to the development and implementation of protocols for conducting relevant qualitative research related to South African primary health care guideline development and implementation.

The successful candidate will more specifically be tasked with:

  • managing qualitative research projects, including managing deadlines
  • managing knowledge, including developing protocols, products, concepts of the SAGE project
  • networking and collaborating with local and international partners and stakeholders, including policy-makers
  • training and developing capacity, including conducting short courses/seminars, and mentoring junior scientific staff, where needed
  • presenting research findings and reports at relevant conferences/meetings
  • contributing to publishing scientific articles in relevant peer-reviewed journals

Appointment requires an analytical thinker and skilled communicator who holds a relevant Master’s degree. Qualifications must be supported by at least two years practical experience. The latter should include

  • conceptualization of qualitative research projects
  • qualitative data collection and analysis skills
  • networking and consultation
  • report writing and publication experience
  • capacity development/mentoring

It is expected that the appointee will be proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and relevant qualitative research software and be able to function effectively under pressure, co-operate well in a team and be willing to travel.

A cost-to-company remuneration package in the region of R 100 194 per annum will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.
