Three year contract position Senior Scientist at the Cochrane Centre

An appropriately qualified and experienced health researcher is required to join our team on a fulltime, three year contract basis, with the objective of playing a coordination role in the South African Guideline Excellence Project (SAGE), an MRC Flagship funded grant of the South African Cochrane Centre.

The candidate should have a background in health related research, with experience in project management and implementation of research for successful delivery according to timelines and budget. They will be required to develop and implement protocols for conducting relevant research related to South African primary health care guideline development and implementation evaluation. The candidate should have knowledge of systematic reviews and the principles of knowledge translation. They should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work with multi-disciplinary teams. They should be competent to communicate with media and develop communication strategies and products relevant for the project.

The successful candidate will more specifically be tasked with:

  • managing projects, including managing deadlines, funding and budgets
  • managing knowledge, including developing protocols, products and concepts of the SAGE project
  • networking and collaborating with local and international partners and stakeholders, including policy-makers
  • training and developing capacity, including conducting short courses/seminars, and mentoring junior scientific staff, where needed
  • presenting research findings and reports at relevant conferences/meetings
  • publishing scientific articles in relevant national/international peer-reviewed journals.

Appointment requires an analytical thinker and skilled communicator who holds a relevant Master’s degree. Qualifications must be supported by at least two years practical experience. The latter should include

  • project and budget management
  • networking and consultation
  • report writing and publication experience
  • capacity development/mentoring
  • guideline development/ implementation

It is expected that the appointee will be conversant with epidemiological and bio-statistical methods, proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, be able to function effectively under pressure, co-operate well in a team and willing to travel.

A cost-to-company remuneration package in the region of R 500 968 per annum will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.
