The Clinical Programme Specialist provides medical, clinical and public health expertise to lead and guide implementation of these aspects of the Company’s work in district programmes across South Africa. The Clinical Programme Specialist is responsible for leading the clinical aspects of a comprehensive health programme, working closely with the Company’s Health Systems Strengthening activities and research endeavours.
The Clinical Programme Specialist provides strategic direction, technical guidance, and leadership on clinical programmes, with a major focus on HIV and TB, but also including consideration of non-communicable diseases and sexual and reproductive health. The Clinical Programme Specialist works with the Company’s district programme managers and technical advisors to assist district health services to provide innovative, effective, relevant and sustainable clinical programmes. S/he participates in national and provincial level policy processes, and provides high-level medical expertise from the Company to South African government partners at all levels of the health services.
Comprehensive knowledge of HIV and TB prevention, care and treatment is required. In addition, the Clinical Programme Specialist has an understanding of and experience in HIV biomedical prevention strategies including counselling and testing, voluntary medical male circumcision, and other emerging biomedical prevention approaches. The Clinical Programme Specialist has a detailed knowledge of the South African health care system and structures and is familiar with Department of Health policies, programme priorities and regulations. Research experience and a publication track record is desirable.
The Clinical Programme Specialist reports to the Chief Operating Officer, based in Parktown, Johannesburg, with regular travel to offices in other provinces. The Clinical Programme Specialist is required to work independently, make programme recommendations, guide implementation and take initiative. The Clinical Programme Specialist is required to have excellent communication abilities, demonstrated management and leadership skills, and a vision for future innovative approaches to healthcare improvements.
