MSc in Epidemiology (MSc) in Research Data Management

Wits School of Public Health invites applications for admission in 2014 to the following new programme:

Master of Science in Epidemiology (MSc) in Research Data Management

There are limited skills or resources with regards to advanced data management for research in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There is need to increase and strengthen this capacity to sufficiently support and match the increase in biomedical research in the region.

To achieve this, a new MSc programme in Research Data Management (RDM) will be run by the Wits School of Public Health (SPH) from 2014. To ensure a good understanding of the underlying scientific process in studies relating to population health, the research data management training will be embedded in the existing Masters programme in Epidemiology.

The new qualification aims to develop research data management as a specialist qualification with specific reference to large longitudinal studies. The programme will also expose data managers to statistical techniques that are typically used to analyze the data they manage. This would help them properly frame the data extractions and make decisions in ways that improve the analysis.

Entry qualification: Minimum 4 year degree or equivalent in a scientific/quantitative discipline with experience in a research

related environment or experience in research data management.

The data scientists graduating from the programme will:

  • Interact with scientists throughout the various phases of a research project
  • Lead the data management team
  • Ensure integrated data management activities from data collection, entry, processing to analysis and publication including the development of data structures and application of data management software.
