2013 Public Health Innovation and Lifetime Achievement ( PHILA) Awards

The Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA) would like to invite nominations for the 2013 PHILA Awardsthe PHILA Annual Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award

The PHILA Annual Award will be given each year to an individual in recognition of their contribution to public health in South Africa during the previous year. This award honours excellence in and commitment to public health research (important scientific publication), advocacy, education and service. Individuals nominated for this award should have made a significant and well recognised contribution to public health in South Africa that is acknowledged by peers. 

The PHILA Lifetime Achievement Award will honour an individual for a life time of commitment to public health, and who has made a significant contribution to public health research, education and service. Individuals should have fundamentally advanced public health in South Africa and be acknowledged by peers. .

Specific criteria for this award include 

  • Over 20 years’ experience in South Africa in public health
  • Outstanding leader in public health and whose quality of work continues to raise public health standards and to whom colleagues in the field look up to as a role model.
  • Exceptional accomplishments as a public health practitioner/ specialist, 
  • High standard of professionalism and a track record of building public health capacity of younger individuals 
  • Influence of the individual’s work in health policy/ health services in South Africa or beyond.


Members of the PHASA Awards Committee and current PHASA Executive Board Members are not eligible for the awards. Recipients do not have to be a member of PHASA.

Nature of the Award.

The award will be presented for the first time at the 2013 PHASA conference in Cape Town

The Award consists of an attractive trophy and a R5000 honorarium. In additional, the recipient will be flown to the 2013 conference and will receive two nights’ accommodation and complimentary conference registration.

Nomination process

Nominees should be PHASA members and should please complete the nomination form. The following should be included with the nomination form.

  • Resume of the nominee
  • Two additional letters of support 
  • The person being nominated should have signed the nomination form

All nominations should be sent to secretariat@phasa.org.za and should be sent by the 15 August  2013. 

Selection process

All nominations will be reviewed by the PHASA Awards Committee. The winners will be notified by the 1st September and will be announced at the 2013 PHASA Conference.
