Introduction to the concepts and methods of applied epidemiology, with an added focus on using epidemiological data from HIV treatment programs to understand and improve HIV-related interventions and research.
Using a combination of structured lecture sessions with practical examples and exercises, participants will cover an introduction to the field of epidemiology, an overview of study design and a basic “how to” of some of the measurement tools used in epidemiological research. A guide to interpreting statistical output and graphics commonly used in public health literature is presented and important epidemiological concepts (bias, confounding, random error and causality) are introduced.
