Clinic on the Meaningful Modelling of Epidemiological Data

The South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling (SACEMA) invites applications to the fourth annual Clinic on the Meaningful Modelling of Epidemiological Data. This two-week modelling clinic (Data: 3-14 June 2013), mounted in collaboration with the International Clinics on Infectious Disease Dynamics and Data (ICI3D) Program, and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), will emphasize the use of data in understanding infectious disease dynamics. The Clinic will bring together graduate students, post-doctoral students and researchers from Africa and North America, with the goal of engaging the participants in epidemiological modelling projects that use real data to grapple with practical questions in a meaningful way.

The Clinic will consist of a series of discussions and tutorials that will guide participants through the process of data‚Äźbased epidemiological modelling. Participants are encouraged to bring data sets and questions to the Clinic, and to start collaborative projects with each other or the organizers. Various statistical and modelling paradigms will be discussed. Computer exercises and group projects will reinforce and extend the various concepts covered. Participants are encouraged to continue research projects begun during the Clinic when they return to their home institutions and will be required to complete a written report on group projects.

The Clinic is targeted towards students and researchers that have prior knowledge of mathematical epidemiology, but have not yet established themselves in the field. Preference will be given to applicants that have the most to gain from Clinic participation. All participants will be required to present on previous or on-going research that is related to the Clinic's themes.

Funding is available to cover food and lodging of Clinic participants, and travel support is available for a limited number of participants from Africa. The application process for the Clinic is highly competitive. The deadline for receipt of applications is 31 March 2013.

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. African applicants are requested to complete the online Application Form.
