The aim of the Wits-INDEPTH H3Africa Collaborative Centre (AWI-Gen) is to study the genetic risk factors for body composition (including obesity, body mass distribution and waist & hip circumference), which together with environmental factors contribute to susceptibility for cardiometabolic diseases. This partnership includes five INDEPTH member Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) field sites across four African countries, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya and South Africa, as well as an urban study site in Soweto (Birth to Twenty and other studies within the Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit). The project is managed under the leadership of Prof Michèle Ramsay (Wits, Human Genetics and SBIMB) and Dr Osman Sankoh (Executive Director of INDEPTH).
The main responsibility will be to manage and coordinate the activities of the H3Africa Cardiometabolic Collaborative Centre (AWI-Gen) (Wits-INEPTH Partnership) and H3Africa Bionet projects according to good management practice, project protocols and the standard operating procedures for the WHC and the NIH.
The incumbent will develop and conduct research into generic and environmental risk factors linked to cardiometabolic disease, together with the project team and publish findings. Duties will include research development, design and implementation; data generation, collection and management; development of SOPs and protocols; and analysing research data and publish research findings.
