Medical Specialist (Infection Prevention and Control)

Tygerberg Hospital and Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University is looking for a Medical Specialist (Infection Prevention and Control, (UIPC)).

Remuneration:

  • Grade 2: R 749 376 per annum
  • Grade 3: R 869 679 per annum

(A portion of the package can be structured according to the individual’s personal needs)

Requirements:

Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Microbiology, Infectious Diseases or Public Health. Registration with a professional council: Registration as a Medical Specialist with the HPCSA in one of the following medical specialties: Microbiology, Infectious Diseases or Public Health.

Experience:

Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employee) as Medical Specialist in Microbiology, Infectious Diseases or Public Health.

Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as Medical Specialist in Microbiology, Infectious Diseases or Public Health.

Competencies (knowledge/skills):

  • In-depth knowledge of legislation, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to IPC practice in the Public Sector
  • Strong leadership skills (including interpersonal skills) with regards to general management (Human Resources and Financial), organisation, strategic planning and contingency/operational management
  • Computer literacy such as MS Office applications (Excel, Word and PowerPoint, Information Management)
  • Ability to function at a strategic level including communication/presentation skills
  • • Strong skill set in respect of IPC research, teaching and training.

Duties (key result areas/outputs):

  • Support and guide the healthcare facilities in achieving a high standard of patient care based on IPC processes as part of the Quality Assurance programme of the Western Cape
  • Play an active role in developing IPC policies, procedures and practices, supporting implementation, monitoring and evaluation at a provincial level within the parameters agreed between the relevant role players within the department
  • Manage the UIPC of Tygerberg Hospital including strategic, contingency and operational planning of the unit, serve as a member of the clinical management team and various committees, providing support and advice to the COO and CEO
  • Serve as a member on various committees at provincial and national level as required
  • Communication with various role players including personnel of faculties of health sciences and health workers at all levels of care
  • Actively promote IPC awareness and ensure good IPC practice and compliance with legislative requirements and National Core Standards
  • Develop and provide appropriate IPC training programs/courses to students and healthcare workers
  • Initiate, co-ordinate and facilitate appropriate IPC–related research projects within the hospital and other areas of the health system.

Note : Relevant postgraduate formal training in IPC is essential.
