Marking its 100th anniversary in 2012 as the oldest medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences has a prestigious reputation for medical achievement and path-breaking research that has impacted on health globally. It is also known for having trained some of the best health practitioners and health scientists internationally. UCT is playing a vital role in advancing South Africa’s health, responding to local problems in the context of global health challenges through supporting training, research and service.
The faculty is committed to ongoing transformation to address the inequities of the past, including promoting access for students and staff.
This is a challenging opportunity to provide vision and academic leadership to the large and complex Faculty of Health Sciences. There are exciting developments with regard to innovations in teaching and, research.
We seek a candidate of high academic standing with proven leadership and managerial ability in the health and higher education sectors, who is registered, or eligible for registration, as a health professional in South Africa. A sound understanding of the South African health system is crucial.
As Dean, you will also have responsibility for health care and academic partnerships, including managing the agreements with the Western Cape Government and the National Health Laboratory Services.
At a university-wide level, you will be a member of the Senior Leadership Group of the University and will be expected to contribute to furthering the strategic goals of the University, including transformation.
The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is negotiable. Appointment to this position is on the basis of a five-year contract which is subject to an annual performance review against agreed objectives. The contract is renewable subject to a prescribed performance review.
