Location: University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng

Degree Requirements: Masters degree in Public Health

Skills Requirements:

  • A background in urban health and development.
  • An understanding of complexities that local authorities are dealing with.
  • An understanding of health issues and an ability to work with guidance, as part of a team

Personal Requirements: To apply for this position you must have completed a Masters Degree or have completed 80% of your Masters course work. South African citizenship or permanent residence is essential.

Contract: 12 months

Commencement Date: November 2011

Job Description:

The Intern will work with Dr Liz Thomas, and the MRC PhD Intern (Pinky Mahlangu) to:

  • Conduct background document and literature review to inform the development of a conceptual framework for the MDG aligned urban health plan
  • Develop a conceptual framework for the MDG aligned urban health plan
  • Use of the framework to review the current situation in BCM using multiple sources of data
  • Prepare the BCM aligned MDG aligned urban health report
  • Train municipal sector departments on how to mainstream health issues in development
  • Develop guidelines on how to repeat the approach in other municipalities
  • Present the approach at a conference
